Where to Start: Working Out

Why Workout?

If you’re looking for one simple habit that can completely transform your life, working out is it. Exercise isn’t just about changing how you look; it’s about changing how you feel. When you move your body regularly, you strengthen your heart, build lean muscle, support strong bones, and boost your overall energy levels. But the benefits go far beyond the physical. A good workout can instantly lift your mood, reduce stress, and clear your mind thanks to those powerful endorphins your body releases. Over time, regular exercise also improves sleep, increases confidence, and lowers your risk of chronic diseases like heart disease and diabetes. In short, working out is one of the most powerful investments you can make in your long-term health and happiness. Your future self will thank you for it. And your particular habits will get you there. Learning how to workout and move your body is so important. Let’s dive in.

There are so many benefits to movement; the positives seem to constantly roll in. Here are just a few of the health benefits of working out (1):

  1. Controlling and maintaining a healthy weight
  2. Boosts overall energy
  3. Promotes better sleep
  4. Fun activities that can involve socializing!
  5. Combats health conditions such as:
  • Stroke
  • High blood pressure
  • Depression
  • Anxiety
  • Cancer
  • Arteritis

    How do I work out?

If there is one tip you take away from this blog, may it be this: find movement that works for you. Working out and moving your body can be fun and exciting if you practice workouts that you genuinely enjoy. Do not get trapped by trends- find what makes your body feel good.

    Strength training:

If you’re new to working out, strength training might sound intimidating, however, it’s actually one of the best places to start. Strength training simply means using some form of resistance (like dumbbells, resistance bands, machines, or even your own body weight) to help build and strengthen your muscles. It’s not just for bodybuilders. It’s for anyone who wants to feel stronger, boost their metabolism, and make everyday tasks like lifting groceries or climbing stairs feel easier. The key as a beginner is to start light, focus on good form, and slowly increase the challenge over time. With consistency and patience, you’ll not only build muscle, but you’ll also build confidence. With strong habits, the real transformation begins.

     Yoga and Pilates:

If you feel like starting your fitness journey and high-intensity workouts are overwhelming, yoga and pilates are amazing places to begin. Both focus on slow, controlled movements that help you build strength and flexibility without putting too much stress on your joints. Yoga blends gentle stretching with deep bre

athing, helping you relax your mind while improving mobility and balance. Pilates hones in on strengthening your core, like your abs, lower back, and hips; through small, intentional movements that may look simple but definitely make you feel the burn. The best part? These workouts not only help tone and strengthen your body, but they also improve posture, reduce stress, and help you feel more in tune with yourself. It’s a powerful (and beginner-friendly) way to build a strong foundation for whatever fitness goals you have next.

    Cardio:

Cardio is one of the easiest and most approachable ways to get started. Cardio, short for cardiovascular exercise, is anything that gets your heart pumping and keeps it pumping for a period of time. That could be something as simple as a brisk walk around your neighborhood, a light jog, cycling, dancing in your room, or hopping on a treadmill. The goal isn’t to exhaust yourself; it’s to strengthen your heart and lungs so your body can use oxygen more efficiently. Over time, this boosts your endurance, increases your energy, and even improves your mood thanks to those feel-good endorphins. I personally have started running; as I train for a half marathon in April, I started at a pace that feels manageable and gradually build from there. Baby steps are the  way to go with cardio. I also enjoy walking outside when the weather is nice and the stair-master! With consistency, you’ll notice everyday activities feeling easier — and that’s when you know your fitness foundation is getting stronger.

To conclude, working out is for everyone. There is a form of exercise out there that everyone can enjoy while finding their way to better health. Whether that be lifting weights, yoga, or a new form of cardio, I encourage everyone to get out there and move. The list of health benefits seems never-ending, so why not give it a shot?
